For the past 30 years, we at Greendale House Palliative and Hospice Care have been providing essential end-of-life services to those who need it most in Johannesburg—patients without the financial means to access quality care during their final journey. As Mandela Day approaches on July 18th, we invite you to embody Madiba’s spirit of service and join us in making a meaningful difference in our community.
Our Lifeline to the Vulnerable
When hospitals discharge patients prematurely due to cost constraints or capacity issues—a growing crisis in the Gauteng health system—we step in. At Greendale House, we offer professional, dignified care to patients living below the poverty line, ensuring that no one faces their final days alone or in unnecessary suffering.
What makes our organisation unique is our sustainable funding model. Through our four thrift shops scattered across Johannesburg, we transform donated goods into life-changing care. Every book, piece of clothing, or furniture item sold helps fund our vital services. Currently, one in four of our patients receives care funded entirely through these shop donations—a powerful testament to how collective small actions can create a profound impact.
The Challenge We Face
Despite our ingenious model, we face a constant challenge: keeping our shelves stocked. In tough economic times, quality donations decrease, resulting in less funding precisely when more people need our services. Unlike organisations that receive substantial corporate funding, we rely on community support—people like you who understand that even small contributions matter.
This is why we’ve created our Mandela Day Donations Drive. In the spirit of Mandela’s call to service, we’re inviting businesses and individuals to organise donation drives in days before Mandela Day. Whether it’s books gathering dust on your shelf, clothes you no longer wear, or household items you’ve replaced—these “pre-loved” possessions can find new homes while funding our essential care.
How Your Business Can Become Our Community Champion
Partnering with us is remarkably simple. We provide everything needed: branded collection bins for your workplace, promotional materials including posters and social media content, and even team members who can speak to your staff about the initiative. For items too large to bring to work, our team offers home collection services.
Beyond the immediate impact on patient care, participating businesses receive recognition as “Community Champions” across our substantial social media platforms and website. Additionally, businesses donating surplus stock can receive Section 18A tax certificates, making this not just a compassionate choice but a financially sound one as well.
A Ripple of Compassion
What makes our initiative particularly special is its multiple layers of impact. Your donations not only fund our essential healthcare services but also promote environmental responsibility through reuse. Meanwhile, our thrift shop customers—many from modest backgrounds themselves—gain access to quality goods at affordable prices. It’s a beautiful cycle of community care that ripples outward from a single donated item.
As Mandela Day approaches, we remind you that we don’t need grand gestures to make a difference. Sometimes, the most profound change comes from simply looking around our homes for items we no longer need but that could help fund dignity and comfort for someone in their final days.
Will you join us this Mandela Day? Together, we can ensure that every person in our community receives the compassionate end-of-life care they deserve, regardless of their financial circumstances.
