At Greendale House, we provide compassionate palliative and hospice care that honours each person’s unique wishes and needs. This blog explores common fears, what research shows matters most, and how families and palliative care teams can work together to support a good death.

What people fear most

Many people fear:

Dying in pain

Dying alone

Dying in a hospital without dignity

Not having said what needed to be said

Becoming a burden

Losing control

What research tells us

Studies consistently show that what matters most to people at the end of life includes:

Being free from pain and distressing symptoms

Being with people they love

Feeling that their life had meaning

Having a sense of control over what happens to them

Not being a burden to others

A good death is personal

A good death looks different for everyone. For one person, it may mean dying at home. For another, it may mean being in an inpatient unit with 24-hour care. For some, it means being surrounded by family; for others, it means quietness and peace.

There is no single template for a good death. It is defined by the values, wishes, and needs of the individual.

What Palliative Care works towards

Palliative care focuses on:

Managing symptoms to ensure comfort

Helping families understand what to expect

Creating space for important conversations

Supporting emotional, spiritual, and practical needs

Ensuring the person is not alone

What families can do

Families play a vital role in supporting a good death by:

Asking their loved one what matters most to them

Having conversations that feel difficult but important

Expressing love, appreciation, and gratitude

Sharing preferences with the palliative care team

Remembering that presence matters more than perfection

It won’t be perfect

A good death does not mean a death without difficulty.

There may be painful or emotional moments. What matters most is that the person feels cared for, known, and not alone. This is something families and palliative care teams create together.

Let’s talk about what matters

If you have not yet had a conversation about goals of care, we can help. These conversations are not about giving up. They are about ensuring that care reflects what matters most to the individual.

Understanding what a good death means allows us to focus on what truly matters: comfort, connection, and dignity. While the journey may have challenges, together with families and palliative care teams, we can create moments of peace and meaning.

For support and guidance, contact us at info@greendalehouse.co.za or call +27 11 483 9100.
