Since 1983, Angela\u2019s Picnic has provided the setting for the classic car equivalent of the Durban July (though with a different kind of horsepower). For one day each year, the ordinarily low-key Riversands Farm Village in Knopjeslaagte is transformed into a place to admire droves of beautifully maintained cars, and often equally polished people, and to meet fellow petrolheads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Day to Remember<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Families, car enthusiasts, and supporters of Greendale House gathered again on May 25 for the 42nd annual event, organised by the South African Motoring Clubs Association (SAMCA). Traditionally scheduled for the first Sunday in April, the event was postponed due to heavy rains, but the perfectly clear autumn skies made the wait worthwhile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s event showcased around 600 classic and modern cars, from vintage Jaguars and Alfa Romeos to gleaming Porsches and charming Minis, and convertibles that made us all dream of open-road adventures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Heart Behind the Wheels<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those who might not know, Angela\u2019s Picnic isn\u2019t just about cars, it\u2019s a living tribute to an extraordinary woman. Angela Heinz, a prominent socialite and the South African agent for Morgan cars, started this much-loved tradition (initially at Delta Park) after being inspired by a vintage car picnic in the Bois de Boulogne in Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After Angela passed away from cancer, the organisation began taking a collection at the entrance to the park, with a focus hospice care, a cause close to Angela\u2019s heart. To date, well over R1 million has been donated in Angela\u2019s name, an immense credit to SAMCA and all those who have kept her vision alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What makes this event so special is knowing that Angela\u2019s vision continues to make a real difference. Proceeds from the day, including voluntary donations from visitors, now directly support our work at Greendale House Palliative and Hospice Care. Now that\u2019s leaving a legacy that matters!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Community Champions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The success of this year\u2019s event wouldn\u2019t have been possible without some amazing people working behind the scenes. A huge thank you to the team at SAMCA, and the sponsors Stellantis, SuperGroup, and all the generous sponsors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re also incredibly grateful for our fantastic volunteers, including Attiya, Dimpho, Nobukhosi, Hammond, and David, who, along with Buhle, our walk-around volunteer coordinator, remind us that giving our time can be just as valuable as any monetary donation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Bob Brown of SAMCA, quoted in The Citizen, said, \u201cAngela\u2019s Picnic has become a cherished tradition. It\u2019s wonderful to see so many people coming together, not just to celebrate cars but to support a great cause.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Journey of Growth<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The picnic has had quite the journey over the years. By 2019, it attracted more than 1,000 cars at its original Delta Park location. After a necessary pause due to the pandemic, the event found a new home at Riversands Farm Village in 2022, where it continues to grow and evolve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we reflect on the success of this year\u2019s Angela\u2019s Picnic, we can\u2019t help but feel excited about what\u2019s to come. So take a deep breath, mark your calendars for April next year, and get ready for another amazing adventure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether you\u2019re a dedicated petrolhead or simply someone who appreciates beauty and community spirit, Angela\u2019s Picnic welcomes you with open arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
