What patients and families can expect:

We understand that starting palliative and hospice care can feel overwhelming and full of questions. That’s why we want to take a moment to explain exactly what you and your family can expect when you choose Greendale House. Our goal is to provide comfort, dignity, and support every step of the way, making this journey a little easier for everyone involved.

At Greendale House, we focus on:

• Comfort

• Dignity

• Symptom relief

• Emotional & family support

We care for people living with serious, life-limiting illness – at home or in our Inpatient Unit (IPU).

Where Care Happens:

Home-Based Care

Regular nurse visits with Doctor oversight.

In-patient Unit (IPU)

Short-term admissions (usually around 2 weeks) for:

• Symptom control

• End-of-life care

• Family respite

Your Care Team:

Home Care Nurse

Your main contact and care coordinator.

Doctor

Provides medical oversight and medication management.

Social Worker & Counsellors

Supports emotional, practical & psychosocial needs.

IPU Team

24-hour care during in-patient stays.

How Home Visits Work:

• Nurses schedule visits directly with families

• Stable patients: usually monthly visits

• Visit frequency increases as needs increase

• Doctor visits happen based on the nurses assessment of a need for a visit

• Every patient is discussed weekly by our full team at our clinical meeting

What We Don’t Provide:

To avoid confusion, we do not provide:

• 24-hour caregivers

• Physiotherapy or occupational therapy

• Transport

• After-hours home visits

• Ongoing medication supply at hospice cost

• We can refer you to trusted providers where needed.

Financial Information:

We are a non-profit organisation.

• Medical Aid patients: billed at medical aid rates

• Private patients: R700 per home visit

• IPU: R1000 per day

• Subsidised care can be considered after social work assessment

No one is denied care due to financial hardship.

I would like to get guidance on palliative care. We cannot transport her and would like to arrange for an assessment and home visit in what I believe is end of life stage.
